The fireplace has been a symbol of pleasure and warmth to numerous homes all over the world. Many of the newer homes have the luxury of having electric fireplaces. No wood is required for an electric fireplace and all you have to do is flip a switch to start the fire.

A fireplace is a space that is made to hold a fire. It is actually an opening that is made in the very bottom of a chimney. The opening is then usually framed by a mantel or mantelpiece. The firepit is the open area that is located below the mantel where the fire is burned. This space can sometimes be used for cooking, but now days it is used mostly for heating rooms.

A flue of a chimney is built so that smoke, gas and particulate exhaust can travel to the outside of the building. Since warm air rises, it travels upward, draws the smoke with it to exit the building.

Many fireplaces are made inside of buildings. But there are certain instances when people will make fireplaces outdoors to provide warmth during the evening, to cook outside, or it is erected mainly for decorative purposes.

In various areas of the world where the climate is particularly cold, the fireplace, or hearth, has been the center of the household. It provides warmth to all and helps the occupants of the house survive the long, hard winters. The fireplace is considered to be an enjoyable and cozy place for people to gather because of the warm glow it gives off.

People often have a feeling of pleasure and contentment due to the pleasantly flickers and hypnotizing leaps of a wood fire. Even today, the fireplace is a most delightful feature that protects and warms people from the elements of nature.

People usually gather around a fireplace for a relaxed, nice conversation as well as family bonding. After putting in a hard day at work, the family meets by the fireplace to catch up on the events of the day just before going to bed.

When a fireplace is designed, the general focus is usually of the fireplace mantel. Traditionally, a mantel offers the chance for the designer or the architect to make a statement about the room being created. In times past, the mantel reflected the architectural design of the inside of the house whether it was classic, French, American, traditional, Renaissance, Italian or Victorian.

It seems that the fireplace is also a feature in literature. Fireplaces have always been related to the idea of reading. They have been deeply etched in children’s books, Christmas songs, and stories like Alice in Wonderland and the Three Little Pigs.

An interesting addition to your fireplace would be a coal carrier. This entails having a good supply of wood, a set of fireplace tools and an old-fashioned coal carrier. This would be essential for a fireplace setting.

Another thing you should consider having are fireplace doors. They provide an easy solution for keeping fire where it belongs – in the fireplace – and also they will protect your family, home and furniture from popping coals.

Whether you are considering building a home with a fireplace or you already have one, you will find there are many ways of decorating it so that it will become the center of attention in your home.

House siding comes in many styles and types including vinyl, aluminum, wood, stucco, seamless steel, brick, and engineered wood. Each material has its individual pros and cons to consider in terms of new home installation, residing an existing structure, and insulation and protection against the elements. It is more than just a great way to modernize the exterior of your home. It is a way to add years of protection to your exterior structure.

It goes without saying that siding your home is a great way of enhancing your home’s visual charm. Siding also adds fortification against the elements – wind, rain, snow, and ice. It is essentially a barrier applied to the outside of your home to make it weatherproof.

Siding helps prevent moisture from seeping in, protects the interior structure against unwanted pests, thwarts the growth of common biological contaminants like mold, bacteria and dust mites, thereby lessening allergic, respiratory and other health issues.

We all know that siding comes in vinyl. Vinyl siding has been around for years. However, siding is made in lots of different materials, and comes in a multitude of colors, textures and gauge thicknesses. It can imitate architectural details that were once made only from wood products.

Using vinyl siding can help reduce home maintenance bills, and protect your home from wear and tear. The material that covers the outside walls of your house is important to your home’s makeup, facade, and weather worthiness. Many companies consider vinyl siding so tough that they offer a lifetime warranty.

One of the biggest detractors from using vinyl siding is in its insulation value. Vinyl siding offers little in the way of insulation-value for your home, so if you choose go this route, make sure that your home has an adequate amount of insulation prior to installation.

Wood siding is also available to install on your house in three forms: boards, shingles, or shakes. It comes in Cedar siding, Masonite siding, and log and pine siding. Woods such as cedar, redwood and cypress are most often used as siding.

Cedar Siding is available in smooth, rough or saw-textured surfaces and is very durable. Cedar is known for its grain qualities and rot resistance. It also takes a stain well adding a rich character to your facade.

Whether you go with vinyl or wood, house siding is an excellent investment for your home. It is a terrific way to update your home’s look while increasing your resale value. If you want to move away from painting, house siding is an excellent alternative that can provide years of beautification to your home exterior.

Landscaping can be an enjoyable activity. Make sure you consider your landscaping choices, your house’s orientation on the lot and the size of your space. You will need some creative ideas and some passion for what you are trying to accomplish.

1…It is recommended that you use the view of the sky or big trees as the background for the scene you are trying to create, to frame your house. Essentially, you are creating a living landscape, much like artists do on their canvases. The tall trees are generally placed in the back garden and the shorter ones in front of the house, providing a beautiful, changing background on your living canvas.

2…Too much of the foundations staring out at the neighborhood can create an unappealing view of the house from the front. You can fix this with a careful selection of shrubbery of varying heights and shades of green. Adding some bright flowers can go a long way to beautifying the front of your house.

3…When planting trees, wherever you do it in your garden, leave some walking space of about three to four feet from the trees.

4…Place taller shrubs between the windows and remember to colour coordinate them and to vary the leaf textures to make an attractive picture.

5…Examine your garden, and, if you see nothing but straight lines and right angles,
soften these lines with vines or small trees grown in large containers in the corners or edges of your garden.

6…One nice addition to your new landscape is a vegetable garden. This will not only greatly enhance your family’s meals, but increase your enjoyment and exercise when you plant, water and harvest the “fruits of your labour” Pick a spot out of the way of the usual traffic in your garden and where there is lots of sunlight.

7…Planting tall trees around the perimeter of your garden will focus attention on your house and soften the vertical lines. Adding smaller trees and shrubs as needed on the remaining parts of your landscape, working your way forward, presents a pleasing appearance from the street and the illusion of depth. One technique is to use plants with darker leaves in the background and plants with variegated leaves or brightly coloured flowers in the foreground.

8…When planning your living landscape, be sure to leave space for parking or for your children’s play area. Vines on trellises and small shrubs can be options to cover the areas or direct attention somewhere else. Do not forget brightly coloured flowers in beds or pots, which gives a sparkling, friendly appearance to the outside your home.

9…Cover the things that are not pleasing to the eye, like clotheslines and
dustbins. Trellises and fences can be attractively concealed when vines cover them. For added beauty, take a look at flowering vines.

10…There are plants that grow faster than others and some that require less attention. A check with your local garden centre will help you make the right choices. Beginners are advised to start with plants that do not require major attention and tending in order to grow adequately.

Landscaping can be enjoyable if it is approached as a family activity and not as a “major dirt moving and backbreaking experience” Your garden is your living canvas. Creativity and passion is all that’s needed to make it a masterpiece.

With the daily buzz surrounding both global weather problems and the need for cheaper and better energy to heat and cool our homes, simple landscaping solutions can make your life easier.

Trying to keep warm in the winter and cool in the summer have been primary concerns and, in many cases, budget disasters, for average families everywhere. Several natural disasters throughout the world have forced everyone to deal with higher energy costs – every day, natural gas and oil prices seem to spiral upward and there doesn`t seem to be any relief in sight.

When beauty meets function, your landscaping can conserve energy in your home while providing wonderful views for your enjoyment. By effectively arranging your landscape to meet specific energy needs, you could save up to 30 per cent on the cost of your heating bills. Conversely, in the summer time, who wants a hot stuffy house with a fan constantly whirring away or, worse still, an even more `expensive to run` air conditioning system?

Using landscaping to conserve energy involves three separate but related considerations

1. The wind`s movement has to be focused in order to manage the effects of it blowing through your house

2. The sun`s heat needs to be redirected effectively throughout your property

3. Your inside temperature, whether warm or cool, needs to be maintained

Believe it or not, you do not have to become Mother Nature to accomplish this result. Simple changes and additions to your garden can accomplish miracles by reducing your energy costs dramatically and, of course, the `knock on` effect on our environment.

Redirecting The Wind

One of the primary contributors to lowering home temperatures is the wind that blows at your house. Even if you have all your windows tightly closed, the frigid winter wind cools your walls and foundations and reduces your inside temperature.

This winter wind often carries a much colder blast than the actual static outside temperatures. Your heating bills will reflect this `wind driven` assault.

You can ease some of this money drain by planting effective windbreaks that include evergreens or other trees native to your location. In fact, even fences placed in strategic locations can serve as windbreaks and can be decorative year round.

Keeping the Heat In

Shrubs and bushes that are planted close to the foundations and walls of the house create what is called a `dead air barrier`. This buffer along the foundation of the house helps the warm or cold air inside your house to avoid the natural, equalizing energy transfer that wastes your money.

Redirecting the Sunlight

The summer sun is one of the main culprits of increasing heat inside your home. When the sun`s rays hit your home directly, 90 per cent of this heat goes into heating up your walls and foundations. This directly increases the burden on your fans or air-conditioning system. In order to block the sun during the peak times, you need to locate trees in your garden either west or south of your house.

One of the key considerations in landscaping includes the various weather conditions that prevail in the area. This means taking into consideration where the sun shines and what path the sunlight takes. Pay attention to the sun`s path over your house during the summer and the winter. Go outside frequently and take notes so you can make educated decisions when you start planting.

By putting specific trees near to your house, you are effectively reducing temperatures inside the home in the summer. Huge shade trees in particular can reduce temperatures up to 10 degrees F. In the winter, dense, deciduous trees that shed foliage allow for sunlight to pass through the branches, providing some warmth to your walls, foundations and inside your home.

Now that you understand the three modifications you need to apply to your garden to naturally control your home`s temperature, let`s discuss how to do that.

Making Your Garden Energy Efficient

A pretty landscape can only go so far. As mentioned above, efficient landscaping that takes into consideration energy needs, may well save a family more then 30 per cent of their usual heat or cooling costs, either in the winter or summer.

So how do you make an energy efficient garden? There are various things that can be considered in both existing and `soon to be developed` landscapes.

One of the primary culprits in the wasting of energy is the warm or cool inside air that escapes through the home`s roof, windows and doors. In order to keep your heated or cool air inside the home, the obvious answer is to add some insulation to block this escape. Adding insulation, though, will not be the total answer.

You need outside protection all year. The best way to achieve this protection is by planting shrubbery around the home`s foundations. As mentioned above, this creates a `dead air barrier`, keeping the heat and cool inside the home where it matters. Experts suggest that not planting the shrubbery too close to the house`s foundation helps to give an increased area for the `dead air barrier`. How about that for natural insulation?

Landscaping is a `win win` situation. Beautifying your surroundings and reducing your heating and cooling costs will benefit everyone.

The question of whether it makes more sense to buy used chainsaws over new machines is often asked and to be honest, there are a number of scenarios which need to be considered.

Budget is one consideration. If you are working on a limited budget then looking for a used chainsaw may be a wise option. However, if you have the money to spend then buying new is probably a better option.

There is an old saying which goes something like this…”buy used and you inherit somebody else’s problems.” I guess that statement can be applied right across the shopping board including buying used chainsaws but if you follow some sensible shopping practices then you can avoid the pitfalls.

Let’s take a look at how to approach shopping for a used chainsaw:

1. Look in your local newspaper classifieds. There are garage or yard sales happening most weekends and these can often unearth some real gems.

2. Be careful though, finding a chainsaw at these sales is one thing thing but you need to make sure the machine is in good working order. Always try before you buy so ask the owner to give you a quick demo. You at least want to know the thing will start.

3. Farm sales and auctions are another avenue worth exploring. In fact, these can be a better option on most occasions than backyard garage sales.

4. Go to your local chainsaw or farm machinery outlet and let them know you are in the market for a chainsaw. Quite often, a client may be on the verge of trading in their chainsaw for an upgraded model and the service dealer can point you in the right direction.

5. Shopping for a used chainsaw online is as easy as typing in your request in your favorite search engine. Ideally, shopping online for a used chainsaw may not be as good as finding one locally but it’s a good back-up if you run out of options. The downside is you will virtually be buying a machine sight unseen and will need to pay shipping charges.

6. Online auctions such as eBay are good alternatives.

7. Online forums can be a gold mine of information. Forums specific to chainsaw or machine tool members provide the opportunity to present your request and if you don’t find a used chainsaw for sale among the members, it’s more than likely you’ll get plenty of referrals and great suggestions of where to look.

There are not just a few ways of propagating (or reproducing) plants, but many. A few of the most popular ways are explained below:

Sowing seeds.

Many houseplants can be reproduced by seeds. Seeds need three basic conditions for germination: moisture, warmth and air. A special seed compost soil can be purchased for this purpose. Most seeds germinate in darkness but a few need light. Look at the flower seed packet to determine which is which.

Plant seeds in small trays. If you plan to grow more than one type of plant, don’t plant the different seeds in the same potting tray.

Thin the seedlings once they are well established to prevent crowding, lack of growth and to provide good air circulation.

When the young plants are sturdy and growing strongly, transfer each of them into its own pot.

Dividing plants.

This is the easiest way to propagate plants. It is usually best to divide plants in the spring. When a plant gets too big for the pot that it is currently in, the roots become root-bound or crowded. This prevents the natural growth of the plant and it begins to die.

Here are the steps to take to divide a plant:

1. Remove the entire plant from the pot.

2. Using your fingers, pull the root apart being careful not to tear the root stems. Only cut through a root as a last resort if the root ball won’t pull apart.

3. Inspect the center of the root. If it appears old and the roots are woody, discard it.

4. Replant the separated plants, each into its own pot.

Layering

Layering is an easy, though slower, method of propagating many trailing and climbing houseplants that have flexible stemps – like ivy plants.

Long stems from the mother plant are secured with small pieces of wire into pots of potting compost. The stems are not cut from the parent plant until roots have formed from the potted plant shoot.

It’s best to layer plants in late spring and early summer while they are growing strongly.

Stem cuttings

Many plants can be reproduced by taking stem cuttings. Here’s how:

1. Use a sharp knife to cut a strong and healthy shoot from the mother plant, cutting it just above a leaf joint.

2. Push a dowel into a pot of compost soil and then insert the cut end of the stem 3/4 to 1 inch into the hole. Don’t bury any leaves since this will cause rotting.

3. Tap compost around the cutting and lightly water.

4. Cover the plant and pot with a plastic bag to create a greenhouse effect. (Use small dowels to keep the baggie from touching the plant.)

As I mentioned before, these are just a few of the many ways of propagating plants. Other ways include water rooting, whole leaf cuttings, leaf square cuttings and more.

No matter what kind of plant that you have, there is a way to propagate it.

—————— ARTICLE START ——————

A small deck does not necessarily have to remain a small deck. There are a number of techniques to make that less than large area increase in size and become more comfortable. The key to small deck design is simplicity.

1. Create the illusion of one big area from 2 smaller spaces. If your deck is bordered by the backyard lawn then allow this outdoor living area to spill out into that open space and it will create the illusion of being larger.

2. Create colorful flower or garden beds on 1 or more sides of the deck so that it does not seem to float like an island in the grassed area of your backyard. Instead the multicolored flowers and greenery will work together to seamlessly blend with the deck and become an integral part of the backyard landscape.

3. Emphasize the deck and not the property line. Instead of letting the lawn end at the property line create perimeter planting beds that will turn any attention inward toward the deck. The careful placement of trees, shrubs and plants in these perimeter garden areas will lead the eye back to the deck which should be the focal point of the yard.

4. Use plants with interesting textures in containers on the deck or in flower beds that border the deck. This will focus attention onto the deck and not the surrounding landscape. If there are stairs or steps that link the deck with the yard, use container plants on the sides of the steps to further direct attention toward the deck surface.

5. Concentrate color in a specific area rather than scatter flowers throughout the backyard. Groups of flowers in containers on the deck or in flower beds adjoining the deck create more impact than scattered blooms. If color is used in more than 1 location, repeat 2 or 3 colors to link the areas together.

6. When possible, emphasize views adjacent to the deck. If there is a water feature, a lovely grove of trees or garden area nearby make sure to leave that view open and accessible from the deck. Move or rearrange furniture and other objects on the deck in order to facilitate this.

7. Place any type of screening strategically to enhance privacy and block only those sights that are distracting. Movable screening provides a great deal more flexibility than fixed types in enabling this to occur.

8. Install a water feature or hang wind chimes close to the deck. The soothing sounds that they create will mask other noises that come from the street or neighbouring yards. A trellis or vertical sections of latticework can provide support for dense greenery which is not only attractive to look at but can also filter out sound and prying eyes.

9. Install built-in seating on the outside edges of the deck since it takes up less room than furniture that stands alone. Also use a round table since it takes up less room than rectangular types and allows the seating of additional people for dining or entertaining.

10.Keep decking patterns simple. Small patterns and contrasting textures created a feeling of being hemmed in and add very little to the appeal of the overal deck design.

11.Move furnishings to the side of the deck to open up the central space and create the illusion of size while also allowing for much easier access and traffic flow on and off the deck.

12.Add a patio off the edge of the deck to enlarge the amount of usable space. Link these 2 areas by using:

a) a similar material such as wood, brick or stone in some way

b) by the use of container plants or planter boxes

c) by using a similar color in some way (flower, decorative art piece, etc.)

d) by installing an arbor or pergola to provide shade protection for all or parts of both

Careful use of a variety of simple deck design techniques can enhance the look of any small deck and create the illusion that it is larger than its actual size.

Every homeowner has the constant desire to want to create a presentable environment in their house. It is only natural – if you make such a large investment as a house, you should maintain it to the best of your abilities. Using simple techniques to decorate your house, you can increase the aesthetics by a huge amount. It can be very expensive to hire a professional home decorator, and it is quite frankly unnecessary. Professional home decorators are simply people who have learned to spot certain fundamental truths about home aesthetics. So if you feel the need to decorate or redecorate your home, you should consider all of the following aspects.

The first step to home decorating is having tasteful furniture and accessories. This doesn’t mean you have to buy a ridiculously expensive set from a furniture store. You can do with thrift store goods if you’re careful. When you first start picking (or replacing) your furniture, you should decide on a certain theme that you want to stick with. You can buy furniture that is mostly made out of wood. If you buy a can of wood stain from your local home improvement store, you can magically match all of your furniture when previously they completely contrasted each other. Alternatively, you may decide to go with a modern theme, or any other number of themes and sub-themes used by decorators. You can get ideas from decorating magazines, stores, or homes of friends.

Once you’ve got your furniture and accessories all generally matching, you can consider your walls and carpets. Of course, this stage of the decorating depends on how much you want to overhaul your home, and how much you are willing to spend in time and money. The fact of the matter is, your carpet and walls are most likely not the best match for the rest of your house, since the builders of your home could not have known what sort of furniture you would have. Painting the walls is a relatively easy project, and you can do it in a weekend if you plan it out right. A tastefully-colored wall can lend a lot of aesthetic value to your home.

The hardest part of decorating your home is noticing small touches that you can make to lend to and improve the overall mood and theme of the house. The reason it’s hard is that you can’t analyze any specific aspect of your house and figure out how to change it for the better. Instead, you have to look at the big picture and creatively imagine things that you could be doing differently. If this doesn’t come naturally to you, then you can use many different sources as inspiration. But a few magazines next time you’re at the store, and look at the rooms pictured within. Most of them have likely been designed by professionals. You can look for the small details that give the room its great style, and figure out ways to apply the same thing to your home. Just make sure that the small details fit the color scheme and style of your overall decor.

The lighting of your rooms is also a very important aspect. When you have a very well-thought-out furniture layout, and specific decorations everywhere, usually the default lighting layout will not suffice. Think about changing the lighting to a different part of the room to change the focus. Think about putting a lamp on a table or even a track lighting system on the ceiling. There are many different options, and if you choose the right one then you can masterfully focus the attention of visitors to the parts of the room that you want them to be looking at.

Home decorating is never easy or quick, which is why so many people are tempted to spend a lot of money for professional advice. But before you do that, find out what exactly you are capable of, and see what you can do for your house.

Although terracotta has been used architecturally for many centuries, it wasn’t until a couple of decades ago that people started to use it for household purposes. It’s hardly surprising that the benefits of terracotta pots were soon realised as the thickness of them guarantees resistance to weather and ageing and they are plant friendly due to the colour and texture of the material.

Terracotta pots (baked earth) are baked clay that has not been glazed and is also applied to the reddish-brown colour considered most typical of the material. The popularity of terracotta pots has grown over the years due to the fact that the range of pots available continues to improve whilst still maintaining reasonable prices. As well as this, almost any plant looks good in a terracotta pot regardless of whether you are growing it inside, in the greenhouse or out in the garden. You can buy them in a wide range of shapes and sizes and either plain or decorated so you are very likely to find a design that matches your existing decor. If you keep your plants in the garden you can even be rest assured that your terracotta pots are safe in winter because as they are fired at such high temperatures they are frost resistant.

Terracotta pots originate from their use throughout history for sculpture and pottery and bricks and roof shingles. In ancient times, the first clay sculptures were dried (baked) in the sun after being found and were then placed in the ashes of open hearths to harden. Kilns were then used, similar to those that are more traditionally used for pottery today.

Most people think of terracotta pots as something you find in your garden. However, terracotta has been used for many centuries around the world. The most famous terra cotta statues are those of the terra cotta warriors in China and another significant user of terracotta has been Emperor Qin Shi Huang’s Terracotta Army of China. American architect Louis Sullivan is well – known for his elaborate glazed terracotta ornamentation which is only possible with terracotta. Terracotta has also been used extensively in the town buildings of Victorian Birmingham, England and pre-colonial West African sculpture also made extensive use of terracotta.

Other reasons why terracotta pots have become so popular include the fact that they are much lighter than other materials and it can be further glazed to produce objects with colour. In fact, they make perfect plant pots because not only are they hard-wearing but they look good as well.
