Wicker is a special type of fiber that is hard woven and used to form a variety of different objects, including baskets. Perhaps the object that wicker is best known for making, however, is furniture. The creation of wicker furniture dates all the way back to ancient Egyptian times and many experts believe that wicker was used extensively during the Iron Age and had a major impact on the development of Celtic Art.

Although wicker furniture has been around for such a long period of time, its appeal has not faded. In fact, became even more popular during the 20th century as arts and crafts enthusiasts began to experiment with even more ways to use wicker to create objects such as furniture.

Traditionally, wicker furniture was made with wicker that was created from plants. Today, most furniture is created from plastic fibers instead. Nonetheless, it is still possible to find pieces that are made with the traditional plant fiber method.

When making wicker from plants, any portion of the plant can be used in the process. The canes or the cores of rattan stalks are commonly used, though entire portions of a plant may be used as well. For example, willow switches may be formed to make wicker furniture as well. Reeds and bamboo are also popular materials for creating wicker furniture made of plant material.

Although the outside of the furniture makes it appear as though it is made entirely of wicker, most furniture has an inner core made of stiffer materials. More pliant material is then used to fill the frame, which helps make the furniture both lightweight and sturdy at the same time.

Since wicker furniture is generally lightweight, it is a good option for use in rooms where the furniture needs to be moved often. Therefore, it is commonly found being used as patio furniture or being used on a porch. Wicker furniture is also often found in sunrooms because it is easy to move about while also helping to create a light and airy feel to the room.

Although wicker furniture is often associated with porches and other rooms that transition from the outdoors to the indoors, it can be used in sitting rooms and other spaces as well. One aspect that many wicker furniture owners enjoy is the fact that pads and other coverings can easily be added to the furniture. Not only does this make it more comfortable, it also makes it easy and inexpensive to change the decor of a room by simply changing out the pillows and other coverings.

Decks can leave one feeling exposed and uncomfortable without some kind of definition both above and at the edges. It is possible to enhance deck privacy and enclosure if the deck site lacks the necessary natural attributes.

It's a good idea to consider privacy first. If the proposed site is at the least exposed side of the house, at a corner where the main structure of the home meets a wing or tucked behind a retaining wall or hedge, privacy probaly will not be an issue. Also if the site is isolated from the house or is on an elevated hill above the surrounding views, the deck design may not need to be altered. However, if the deck is not effectively screened from the street and from a neighbor's view, then it will be necessary to add a fence, a wall, trees or shrubs to the plan. Fences create privacy and security but with a little thought they can also contribute beauty to the landscape. Climbing vines or hanging baskets full of cascading foliage and flowers can add color and texture to perimeter fencing for little expense and effort.

These same elements have the capacity to produce a sense of enclosure but so will benches, garden beds and other features. Overhead space can also affect the comfort level of deck occupants. So an outdoor ceiling or overhead such as an arbor, pergola or tree limbs is an possible consideration.

Walls and fences make attractive additions to an outdoor space design by connecting the deck to the larger landscape and adding a vertical contrast to the horizontal expanse of the lawn.

Walls and fences can define space giving it an identity that suits its purpose. They can create privacy, tame slopes, block annoying winds, form backgrounds for decorative accents and hide unsightly utility devices and areas. Walls and fences can make large areas seem less imposing by dividing them into smaller ones.

There are obvious walls such as fences, hedges and the sides of the house. But there are also walls that are not as obvious. These are perceived walls that include low hedges, built-in or freestanding benches, planters, changes in deck levels, posts that support an overhead, plants, shrubs and small trees. Anything that separates the deck from the rest of the world or separates one area of the deck from another can be considered a wall. Erecting solid walls, fences or dense hedges to divide property into divided spaces can result in separate but isolated areas. Perceived walls, however, suggest the separation without isolating the areas from one another. They interrupt both visual and actual movement but they do not block views. As a result they direct traffic effectively and define space without creating a feeling of claustrophobia.

Another means of creating deck privacy and enclosure is through the use of screening which simply involves the careful placing of plants, fences, walls, trellises and other stuctures. The amount of screening required will depend upon on how each area of the deck is to be used. Cozy, intimate places for conversation, reading, sunbathing or meditation should provide lots of privacy. These areas need to be screened with walls, high fences or dense evergreen plantings. Active areas for family gatherings, child play and parties require less privacy. Partial screening is the answer such as latticework fences, airy trees or walls with available seating.

The placement of privacy screens is an important consideration. The closer to the deck area, the more privacy is created. The farther from the deck area, the less privacy.

Few decks require screening around the entire perimeter. Plan the screening to block the most revealing view first. The idea is to enhance privacy without barricading the outdoor deck space.

For maximum privacy as well as security install a solid wall, a fence or dense hedge. These structures can function as effective boundaries that can retain children and pets within the yard and keep unwanted visitors out. They make an ideal backdrop for garden beds where flower borders, ponds, fountains and sculpture will stand out dramatically and enhance the aesthetic look of the yard.

Selecting materials for outdoor walls and fences offers another excellent design opportunity. There are a tremendous number of choices but the goal should be to select materials that suit the style of the home and the landscape. A solid brick wall can look classic and imposing. Interlocking concrete blocks suit most home styles. An evergreen hedge or closely planted row of roses can create a colorful and attractive barrier that is almost inpenetrable.

Homeowners are only limited by their imaginations and willingness to experiment with creative and different ways of creating deck privacy and enclosure.

The primary function of a housewrap or building paper is rain penetration control. It is not air infiltration despite what the manufacturers say. The energy aspects of housewraps are vastly overstated.

They have been embraced by builders for this function as can be evidenced by their market penetration. Yet their critical role in building durability is under appreciated and not marketed. It has been a triumph of marketing over physics.

The problem with building papers in general and housewraps in particular is a loss of water repellency. Contaminants referred to as surfactants ("surface-active contaminants") either raise the surface energy of the housewrap or building paper or lower the surface energy of the water allowing the "wetting" of the housewrap or building paper surface by water.

Once wetting of the housewrap or building paper surface occurs, material pores in the housewrap or building paper become filled allowing transport of liquid phase water across the housewrap or building paper via capillarity or hydrostatic pressure (gravity).

Water soluble extractives in wood such as tannins and wood sugars in redwood and cedar are a type of surfactant that contaminate the surface of housewraps and building papers raising their surface energy.

Detergents and soaps are another type of surfactant that contaminates the surface of water, lowering its surface energy. Both result in the liquid (in this instance "water") being able to "wet" the surface (in this case the building paper or housewrap).

The surface energies of either the liquid or surface or both are altered so that the surface energy of the surface becomes greater than the surface energy of the liquid. Back-priming or back-coating wood clapboards and trim helps to isolate the surfactants in the wood from the housewrap or building paper surface.

Similarly, providing airspace between wood trim and clapboards using furring or some other spacer ("cedar-breather") reduces the quantity and time liquid phase water is trapped in the exterior of the wall assembly thereby reducing the potential of surfactant movement.

Where wood is concerned, both back-priming and airspace are highly recommended. Where stucco is concerned, stucco should never be installed in direct contact with any of the plastic based housewraps.

Stucco can "bond" or adhere to the housewrap surface altering its surface energy thereby allowing housewrap pores to become "wetted" and subsequently establish capillary flow. Another issue with stuccos is many have additives that improve workability and freeze-thaw resistance. These additives are typically surfactants.

A drainage space between stucco and building papers or housewraps is essential to control liquid phase water penetration. Bonding typically does not happen between stucco and building papers.

However, with most stucco applications applied over building papers, insufficient drainage results. It is recommended to use at least two layers of building paper under stucco in order to allow some drainage between the two layers.

Even better is to provide a spacer between the two layers of building paper by using a textured building paper or a building paper with granules or cork adhered to its surface thereby creating a space.

Another analogy that might be useful in understanding some of the concepts involved is one of being inside of a tent during a rainstorm and pushing your finger against the inside of the tent surface creating a leak by both compressing and tensioning the fabric altering its surface energy.

Dirt and dust can also affect housewrap performance. Think of a fabric that is "Scotch Guarded" to be water repellent that subsequently becomes dirty. The fabric must be cleaned to remove the contaminants and retreated to reestablish water repellency. Don't let you housewraps become muddy or dirty.

Feng shui secrets for the bedroom can help enhance anyone's love life. A person does not need to be in a relationship in order for the ancient philosophy to take effect.

The bedroom is the perfect place for feng shui to have a huge impact. By following a few simple and non invasive principles, a person or couple can have the boudoir that they have only seen in their dreams.

According many a feng shui master, the best way to attract love is to adjust the environment. If a bedroom is dirty, full of clutter, or contains artwork that is not conducive to sensuality Cupid may be driven from the door before he even has a chance to enter and help one to make sweet love.

Another big thing that is good feng shui advice is to keep the television out of the bedroom. Instead of watching t.v. to unwind, try reading a romantic or even erotic novel. This can not only help one to unwind but also help to make armoire.

Another great idea that is one of the best kept feng shui secrets is to treat one's self to sensual bedding. Blankets, high thread count sheets, and fluffy pillows will not only feel incredible, but a person will also want to linger in the bed longer and this alone can promote sweet nothings to be spoken in whispers. Another thing to assist in feng shui decorating in the bedroom is to pull the bed away from the wall.

If a bed is pushed against a wall, this will crows out any chance for love to enter a person's life. And if love is already in one's life, then this will cause a person to cuddle with their loved one.

Another aspect to keep in mind about the bedroom that can be one of the disputed feng shui secrets in the bedroom is to get rid of that monster king bed and downsize to a queen. This of course promotes cuddling, but some may have issues.

Feng shui secrets can unlock the mystery of love if given the chance. The bedroom can become a retreat that helps lovers become closer or helps singles attract just the right mate that one is searching for.

Changing the sheets, buying a different bed, or painting the room a different color can all enhance one's ability to create a retreat that even a feng shui master would envy.

The bedroom should be a retreat for building relationships, and by following the above mentioned ideas, that can be easily achieved.

Start your decorating in the most obvious place, the floor. Most people seem to overlook the benefits of adding decorations to their floor. Mainly because they see flooring as a fixed item and until it gets worn-out, it basically keeps the same look for years.

It is true that flooring is not easily replaced and can cost thousands of dollars. That is why adding decorations or eye candy to your floor is such a great idea. Adding color coordinated flooring accessories will accent a room and won't get outdated for as long as the flooring stays in tact.

A perfect accessory to use that will add value and give an enchanting appeal to any room is decorative floor registers. They are called many things; floor registers, grates, air vents, grilles and so forth. But regardless of what you call them, they are built to serve the same purpose and add beauty.

Floor registers are available in hundreds of size and color combinations and can be matched to any type of flooring product and room scheme. The main consideration for proper selection is identifying the fixed items of the room where they are to be placed.

You should not try to get one style or finish and make it work for every room. Although some styles and finishes are very universal, the way to accent a room is to get a style and finish that matches the scheme of that room.

Another thing to consider is the type of flooring that is installed in each room. Rooms with carpeting will use a different floor register that a room that has wood floors such as typical dining room and kitchen areas. By choosing a decorative register to match that specific type of flooring, you will achieve the best overall look for the room.

If you have hardwood flooring in certain room of your home that have been stained with an unknown color, simply get an unfinished floor register and have someone match a stain to your floor. This is the best solution and will ensure that the register matches perfectly.

Now for matching other items in the room like cabinets, shelving and wall paper. This is a simple process if you have flooring that is either a neutral color or has been matched to the other items in the room. All you have to do is pick a matching color register with a style that goes with the scheme of the room.

For rooms that have mixed-matched items, things can be a little more complicated. The best thing to do is to decide which item you would replace with a different color at some time in the future. This way, the floor registers will compliment the fixed item with the longest expected life span. You want to have great looks, but without throwing money in the trash.

Make sure you take the scheme of the room into consideration as well. If the room has a Victorian look, get decorative floor registers that match that era. There are literally hundreds of different styles, types and colors to choose from, so there is no excuse for installing a generic register.

Also remember to buy the matching ceiling and wall grilles to blend with the rooms new look. It is not always necessary to match a ceiling grille to the floor registers. An example of this would be if you have mahogany hardwood flooring and slick finished ceilings coated with white paint. A mahogany ceiling grille would look extremely out of place.

Best practice is to use your own judgment and do not get overboard with trying to accomplish a unique look. In most cases, a straight forward design with blended accessories will give the most practical look that you and the rest of your family can live with for years to come.

Home owners know, or need to know, that a percent of their yearly earnings will have to be committed to home improvement upgrades. No matter how careful you are or how much care you take in protecting your home, the facts are that nothing last forever.

Other reasons for improvement may be that you want to change the look of a room to make it more appropriate for an upcoming "new member" of the family. Or, you may be planning to sell your home and need to give certain rooms more public appeal.

What ever the situation, you will have to spend time and money on remodeling your home at some point in time. So planning ahead and knowing the easiest ways to get these upcoming projects done will save you time and money.

The most common of all home improvement projects is flooring, especially, Do-It-Yourself (DIY) flooring such as laminate and vinyl, so we'll keep our focus on flooring.

The things that make these types of DIY projects so desirable are the lack of special tools and skill needed to perform them. Almost anyone with the desire to take on a remodeling job and has basic carpentry skills along with standard tools can do a professional job.

There are many more flooring products that have massive appeal and are very common in terms of replacement, even if they have to be installed by a flooring contractor or professional remodeling company. So DIY consumers are not the only ones looking for new flooring, especially in the case of flipping houses or preparing a house for sale is concerned.

By now, you should be asking what can make all of this easier, save time and of coarse, money. Well, there is some good news in the flooring industry. Almost all of the major flooring companies now offer there products and services online, and can deliver your purchases right to your door.

The leading companies are making it easy and convenient for you to buy their merchandise without ever having to leave your home. Most have created online flooring galleries so you can see exactly how the product you want looks in various room scenes and in an array of different colors, which would be an impossible task for a physical store.

These galleries are also built to inspire you and give you new ideas on how to use each type of flooring in a variety of room settings such as bathrooms, kitchens, dining rooms and the like. The ability to display literally thousands of combinations is where online flooring stores totally rule the flooring world.

Shopping at these online stores is a huge benefit for both you as the consumer and the flooring companies that host them. You get to see every available option and how it can be used and the flooring company gets to show all of the available options along with new products, news and for some of the larger stores, they can even get feedback and input on items through interactive online forums.

As for choosing which online flooring store is the right one for you, I would say to review the background of the company that is providing the online store and treat the information just as you would for any other business you or store you buy from.

Some of the most important factors to consider are the security of the site and the reputation of the flooring company. You need to make sure the site offers a secure shopping cart system such as PayPal, where you don't have to worry who is getting their hands on your information.

A lot of online stores are secure in relation to the online transaction, but they have in-house shopping carts that allow them to keep your information. While security companies can verify how your information is being used online, how do you know what is being done with your information that is now stored by someone offline.

Maybe I'm just paranoid or old fashion, but I would suggest staying away from these types of shopping cart systems and stick to ones that are secured and trusted throughout the world and can assure your private information stays private.

In summary, online flooring stores are definitely here to stay and can save you huge amounts of time and money, while providing the convenience of shopping from home. Just use common sense and don't buy from unknown companies or unsecured shopping cart systems and you will reap the rewards.

The fabrication process for a standing seam metal roofing system can be done in a couple of different manners, depending on your individual needs and preferences. One option is to have the panels made in a factory and the other is to make them right on the job.

The natural properties of a metal roof are very impressive. Metal panels are durable and long lasting as well as virtually maintenance free. They offer tons of remodeling benefits like the ability to be installed over almost any type of existing roof system and the wide array of color options and styles that can be used to match any home style.

Standing seam metal roofs have become popular in parts of the country that present harsh weather conditions such as the Deep South, where conditions are hot and humid for many months of the year. They are also admired by northerners because of their ability to withstand heavy snow and wind loads.

Some of the other advantages of significant value are the fire resistant properties and the universal styling that enables blending to almost any home's design. Metal roofs offer what many believe to be the perfect styles for upscale homes as well as homes of lesser value, such as mobile homes. The most popular of any style is the standing seam metal roof, which has been used throughout the world on almost every type of home imaginable.

A standing seam roof is constructed of many interlocking panels that run vertically from the roof's ridge (the top of the roof) to the eave. The interlocking seam where two panels join together is raised above the roof's flat surface, allowing water to run off without seeping between panels.

Standing seam roofs come in many shapes and sizes. In some instances, the vertical panels are cut to length at a factory and delivered to the job site. Metal panels can also be made at the job using portable metal fabrication equipment. Other options include standing seam "shingles" that arrive prepackaged (typically in three to five-foot lengths) and are installed in a staggered pattern for visual effect.

Two types of methods are commonly used to secure the panels to the roof sheathing. Hidden fasteners are secured to the raised portion of each panel, and subsequently covered by the next adjoining panel during installation. The second (and less costly) method utilizes exposed fasteners that are driven through each metal panel into the roof sheathing.

Now we can discuss how standing seam metal roofs are constructed. Let's assume the metal roof panels are going to be formed on the jobsite instead of in a metal fabricators shop or factory.

The metal roof panels are made individually to accommodate the required length. This reduces jobsite waste, as short and long panels can be cut to the appropriate length. To form the interlocking panes, a metal fabrication machine called a brake is used to shape metal into various designs.

To prevent damage to the ends of the roof panels, a hydraulic shear is used to cut each panel to the required length. Even though the roof panels require some trimming by hand, it only takes a few minutes to cut each one and prepare it for installation.

Each part of the metal roof system is installed in a certain order which creates a water resistant seal. First, roofing paper is installed over the roof sheathing.

Next, the roof's valleys (formed where two roof sections meet at an angle) are covered. A preformed ridge cap covers the roof's peak. Every vertical roof panel is fastened and adjoined to the ridge vent for a consistent look.

Each roof panel that runs from ridge to eave tucks neatly into the ridge vent. Clips secure each panel to the roof sheathing. Using hidden fasteners creates a more polished look once the job is completed.

The next adjoining panel will cover the clips that secure each panel (left). The raised seams formed by the panel ends are crimped together to form a watertight seal.

Adjoining roof panels are crimped to one another to cover the clips. Each panel hides the clips that secure the adjacent panel to the roof sheathing. By completely covering the fasteners, they are not exposed to the elements, reducing the possibility of water damaging the roof sheathing or the structural system below.

The final results: Ridge cap, valleys and vertical sections all come together to form a watertight seal against the elements. A properly installed metal roof can go many years with little or no maintenance.

------------------ ARTICLE START ------------------

Vinyl siding is the most effective way to protect your home from the elements, as well as, save on energy costs. Satisfaction comes from knowing you will never have to paint again! Years of testing and experience have proved the superiority of vinyl siding over wood; aluminum, and steel siding. Unlike these materials, vinyl will not scratch, dent, rust or rot!

Why Vinyl Siding?

Vinyl is now the number one of choice for nearly all homeowners. Builders, Realtors, Investors all say that vinyl siding is the smart choice. There are two simple reasons. Vinyl lasts longer than nearly every other material, endures against sun, wind, rain and hail, and it never has to be painted.

There are many different siding profiles to create different exterior looks. You can select traditional clapboard style, the beveled look of a dutchlap panel, or the old-fashioned charm of a beaded panel. Your home can have an exterior that is slick and modern or one that is rustic and comfortable.

Important Things to Know About Vinyl Siding

Panel Thickness - Gauge is the thickness of the panel. The higher the gauge (or panel thickness), the better the panel. Thicker panels offer greater impact and weather resistance. Thicker panels also are more rigid so they will hang straighter and flatter against the wall for a more attractive finish to your home.

Wood Grain - Vinyl siding is molded with different wood grains to offer different exterior looks. Smooth grains tend to work well with homes with more traditional designs, but also work well with contemporary architectural styles. More pronounced grains tend to give homes a more rustic appearance.

By the Square - Vinyl siding is sold by the "square". Each square of siding covers 100 square feet, and shipping cartons from the manufacturer contain two squares. You can estimate how many squares you will need for your house - determine the square footage of each side of your home and divide by 100.

Don't subtract windows and doorways from the measurements. Add 10 percent to account for cutting and waste.

Style, Performance and Value

You can select the right siding for your home by considering the architectural style, the environmental conditions such as wind, hail, and your budget.

Design and Style

However, the full benefits of vinyl siding come only to those who choose a superior company that uses the highest quality products. Make sure to choose a company that guarantees results on workmanship and the effectiveness of the vinyl siding they use.

Vinyl siding, when properly manufactured and expertly installed, should provide insulation in a few important ways:

* First, it should create structural integrity. Vinyl siding can be thought of as a protective shell for your home. In this way, it should be as seamless and durable as possible.

* Second, vinyl siding should increase R-value. R-value refers to thermal resistance, and is one way of measuring the insulating capacity of any given material.

* Third, vinyl siding should allow moisture to escape. By permitting the walls to "breathe," the problems associated with mildew and rot can be effectively averted.

* Finally, vinyl siding should prevent air infiltration. In this way, the many unwanted elements carried by the air-such as noise or pollution-can be significantly reduced.

Not all vinyl sidings are created equally. Neither are the guarantees from the companies that install them! Most vinyl siding you will find today is made from recycled material. It can usually be recognized by its light bluish color on the back-side.

Vinyl siding produced by inferior companies is usually hollow-backed, with flat foam or drop-in contoured foam underlayments. Such options provide no structural integrity, and are either too thin to provide adequate insulation, or trap in moisture entirely.

Often such products are poorly installed. When improperly nailed, even the highest quality vinyl siding will lose its protective and insulating features. Such problems will only become worse over time and eventually resulting in a total loss of your investment!

------------------ ARTICLE START ------------------

Before you can determine the best carpet for any specific situation, you must first have a basic understanding of the various types of carpet along with the benefits of each type. For instance, some types of carpets do better in high traffic areas than others. Some carpets have a more casual appearance while others look more formal.

Carpet is basically constructed in three types of piles: loop pile, cut pile and cut-n-loop. Cut-N-Loop, also known as patterned carpet, is a combination of both loop and cut yarns or variations of loops set to different pile heights.

Carpet manufacturers and fiber producers are combining softer fibers and better built-in stain resistance with special backings that block odors, spills and more! These types of features are built-in to many of the better quality carpets offered by the leading carpet manufacturers. Mohawk Carpets with SmartStrand and Shaw Carpets with SoftBac Platinum display some the major advancement in carpet construction technology.

Most carpet today is tufted, rather than woven. The tufting process is similar to using a large sewing machine that is about 13 feet wide with 100 of needles that sew the yarn into a synthetic backing. The majority of carpets sold today are made from nylon fibers twisted into yarns and then tufted into carpet.

How long a carpet will retain it is like new texture and appearance is based on the type of fiber, how tight the yarns are twisted and heat-set, and the pile density. Also, how tightly the tufts are packed together will also effect the long term durability of a carpet. Obviously, by not cleaning your carpets regularly, or by using improper cleaning methods will affect the appearance and life of your carpet as well.

Shown below is a description of how to choose the best carpet for your situation along with comparisons of different carpets plus the benefits of using carpet as compared to other flooring systems.

Carpeting Versus Hard Surfaces

* Carpet is available in many different styles, colors, and designs
* Carpet is an excellent acoustics and thermal insulator. It increases thermal comfort and at the same time decreases unwanted ambient noises.
* Carpet is certainly more comfortable to walk on, cushioning feet and reducing fatigue.

Things to Remember When Choosing Carpet

* The amount of traffic should determine the quality of carpet and padding you choose.
* Carpet in high traffic areas such as hallways and stairs will last longer with a textured high face weight cut pile with tightly twisted yarn or a high face weight loop pile.
* The quality of the padding is very important. Upgrade the padding to match the quality of the carpet being used. Do not fall for the free padding offer. UPGRADE!
* Less expensive carpet and padding can be used in areas where the traffic is less of a factor, such as bedrooms and closets.

Color and Pattern Considerations

* Color is typically the most difficult part of choosing carpet, there are many different colors to choose from.
* Lighter colors tend to brighten a room and make it appear to be larger. Darker colors tend to do the opposite.
* Patterns can also affect the apparent size of a room. Large patterns tend to make a room appear smaller while small patterns make a room appear larger.
* Patterns also help mask stains and wear.
* Always, take samples home to compare color and style to your room.

Types of Carpet

* There are three different methods for producing cut pile carpet-Wilton, Axminster, and tufted.
* Axminster is a weaving process where virtually any number of colors can be used. It is primarily used in high quality patterned wool carpet.
* Wilton is also a type of weave, usually containing up to five colors. The patterns are limited, but the Axminster process makes for a more durable carpet.
* Tufted is the most common type of carpet produced in the US today. Though relatively new, tufted carpet is simpler and less expensive to produce than Axminster and Wilton carpet.

Types of Yarn

* There are numerous types of yarn used today; some natural and some man made.
* Wool, nylon and polyester are the most popular.
* Each one offers different characteristics.

Carpet Styles

* There are three basic styles of carpet, Loop pile, Cut pile, and Cut-n-loop
* Loop pile carpet is continuously looped, and offers various textures.
* Cut pile carpet is made when the tops of the loops are sheered off.
* Cut-n- loop carpet is a combination of the two processes producing distinct patterns.

Now that you know what to look for in carpet, the next time you begin a flooring overhaul, you will be able to an educated selection instead of depending on the advice of a store clerk.

Important Tip :: When purchasing carpeting, you should buy the best-quality carpet you can afford, coupled with the highest quality padding. In fact, the padding that goes between the carpeting and the sub-flooring is as important as the choice of carpeting itself.
Padding provides softness and support, cuts down on noise and insulates the floor. Often referred to as "underlay" or "cushion," padding thickness depends on the pile of the carpet above it. Padding should be no thicker than 7/16 inch, even for a very deep pile carpet. Too much cushion can actually void a manufacturer's warranty; so, take the time to find the padding that is right for your new carpet.

Asphalt shingles are economical and versatile, which may be why they represent more than 80 percent of the roofing market. They're relatively inexpensive to buy and install, are suited to roof pitches from 4-in-12 to vertical, and are available across a wide range of quality, cost, and style.

Easy to cut, fit, and fasten, asphalt shingles are compatible with many different kinds of flashing and edging products, and don't require specialized accessories for roof edges, wall terminations, chimney or vent flashings.

Choosing Shingles

There are two kinds of asphalt shingles on the market: Fiberglass shingles and organic-mat shingles. Both are made with asphalt, but fiberglass shingles use a fiberglass reinforcing mat, while the organic kind use a cellulose-fiber mat derived from wood. The organic mat of traditional shingles has to be saturated with soft asphalt, then coated with a harder asphalt for protection; the fiberglass shingles need only the hard asphalt coating.

Fiberglass shingles are thinner, lighter, easier to lug around, and carry a better fire rating than organic shingles, but organic-mat shingles are tougher and stay more flexible in cold weather. Fiberglass shingles predominate in southern and central regions, but organic shingles are still popular in the North and are almost the universal choice in Canada.

Be Aware Of The Warranties

When it comes to shingles, the drawbacks center on service life. While asphalt shingles come with warranties ranging from 20 to as long as 45 years, roofers and builders remain skeptical of those warranties. Since warranties are a marketing device, they are not a reliable predictor of lifespan.

In the past decade, there have been many complaints of asphalt shingle failure long before warranties expired. Many homeowners have been dissatisfied with warranty payouts that didn't cover all the costs of repair or replacement, as well.

So rather than compare warranties, it's wise to demand shingles that meet industry manufacturing standards. Fiberglass asphalt shingles are covered by a standard called ASTM D-3462, which requires products to pass tear-strength and nail-withdrawal tests.

Until recently, few shingles on the market actually passed the tests. But codes have been upgraded to permit only fiberglass shingles labeled as complying with this standard to be installed. Today some manufacturers even have the independent Underwriters Laboratory certify that they measure up. To check for compliance, look for the familiar UL logo on the label next to the ASTM D-3462 certification.

Organic-mat shingles are covered by their own standard, ASTM D-225. In practice, organic shingles have a much higher tear strength and nail-pull resistance than fiberglass shingles.

They are also heavier because of the additional asphalt used to make them. Old-time roofers used to pick heavier shingles when they wanted a better brand; while this may not hold true for modern fiberglass shingles, it's still a good rule for the organic kind.

Shingles that pass the standards cost more than low-grade shingles. However, installation is a big factor in total roof cost and, since it costs just as much to nail on poor shingles as first-rate ones, cheap shingles are rarely worth it.

Shingle Appearance

Asphalt shingles now come in all kinds of colors and profiles. The old 3-tab shingles are still around, but a wide range of "architectural" shingles, whose profiles suggest the random shadows and patterns of slate, wood shingles, or ceramic tile, are readily available.

These specialty shingles often carry a longer warranty but, once again, beware: Check to see that the shingle actually has two full layers, not a half-width of lower lamination. Also, make sure the package is labeled as complying with ASTM D-3462 or ASTM D-225.

Architectural shingles have a random pattern and, as a result, can be easier to lay out than the standard 3-tab kind. With a traditional shingle, you have to line up the tabs properly, or the roof will have a haphazard, wavy appearance.

The surface pattern of the architectural shingles, on the other hand, obscures the shape of the shingles themselves, and provides the desired appearance while saving effort on the layout. This savings in installation time may actually help offset the sticker price associated with specialty shingles.

Replacing a flooring system and not installing new floor registers that match the new floor is an unsightly mistake, yet easy to overlook.

If you are a homeowner, then you will have to hire a flooring contractor at some point, to replace or cover up the carpet, vinyl, hardwood or some type of flooring in your home.

And when you do, make sure you get all of the accessories that go along with the new floor, as well as match the scheme of the house and/or room where it is being installed.

One of the most common mistakes that degrade the intended look of a room is replacing the flooring and reinstalling the old floor registers.

You may be surprised to know that 75 percent of the floors that are replaced each year get accessorized with degrading old floor registers, instead of new decorative floor registers to match the scheme of the rooms.

Before I get into the selection process, I want to point out how and why this happens.

When most of us need work done to our homes, the first thing we do is pickup the yellow pages or go to some sort of online phone book and look for someone we think can do what we need, schedule an appointment and wait for them to show up.

Even though this works for some people, this is not the best way to get a professional job done and done with all the right products. Simply because most of the businesses listed in the phone books are contractors, not decorators or designers and only care about giving you what you want not what you need.

The best choice is to visit a local flooring center so you can view a larger selection of products and get ideas from their decorators on how to match accessories, like floor registers, to the actual flooring you are going to have installed.

Even if you decide not to purchase from that store, at least you will have a better understanding of what you need so you can make sure to mention to the contractor that you want to have decorative floor registers installed to match your flooring.

Thankfully, this most commonly overlooked issue of installing new floor registers to complement your new flooring, is something anyone can do themselves. So if hindsight is 20/20, do not worry, you are not stuck with what you got.

This brings us to the issues of how to choose and install floor registers, heating registers, grates, grilles or what ever term you like to use.

Let us begin with the installation so you know how to choose the right sizes. All you have to do is remove the existing registers, usually done with a screwdriver, measure the length and width of the opening in the floor, and reinstall until you get the new ones.

Subtract 1/8" to 1/4"(depending on how square the opening is) and this is the inside dimensions for the new floor registers.

You can now use these dimensions to choose and order your new floor grates.

As far as choices, there are literally hundreds of different styles and finishes to choose from. Pick colors or finishes matching each room, but try to stay with the same style throughout the house. This will keep each room coordinated together.

If you have some rooms of your home that you change the colors or decorations in often, it is best to select neutral colors to these room. Also make sure to take cabinets wallpaper and other decor in the rooms into consideration.

You may also want to look at replacing the air return grilles to match the look of your new floor registers.

By following these guidelines, you can have a wonderful looking home interior that stands out in the crowd, and usually for less than $250 bucks.

------------------ ARTICLE START ------------------

The key to moisture control is the control of air transported moisture. This requires an air barrier system or air pressure control that may or may not be combined with an air barrier system.

There is a big difference between air transported moisture and vapor diffusion. Proponents of vapor barrier systems tend to confuse these two transport mechanisms do they control the vapor diffusion part, the air transport part or both? It is not always clear.

What is clear is that air transport is far more significant than vapor diffusion. What is also clear is that you do not need a 6-mil polyethylene barrier to control air transported moisture. Permeability values of materials are irrelevant in air barrier systems. Although 6-mil polyethylene is an excellent vapor barrier it is often a very poor air barrier.

I will agree that it is possible to install 6-mil polyethylene as an air barrier. The key point that needs to be made is that although air barriers are a good idea everywhere, vapor barriers are not.

Moisture flow by vapor diffusion is governed by the second law of thermodynamics (basic physics to some, not so basic to others). Moisture will flow by diffusion because of a concentration gradient as well as a temperature gradient (from "more to less" as well as "from warm to cold").

This means that it tends to go from the inside out up north and from the outside in down south. In the middle of the country part of the year it goes from inside out and part of the year it goes from outside in. It is easy to say lets put a vapor barrier on the inside up north and on the outside down south. It is much harder to define "north" and "south".

Everyone can agree to put a vapor barrier on the inside in Burlington, VT, and on the outside in Miami, FL. It is a little more difficult to agree on where to put a vapor barrier in other locations. If you put a vapor barrier on the inside in Washington, D.C., half of the year it will be in the wrong place.

You certainly do not want to put a vapor barrier on both sides of the wall. It's pretty obvious that you do not want a vapor barrier at all in most assemblies in mixed climates. "Flow-through" design makes more sense in mixed climates where vapor diffusion is slowed down, but not stopped. Hence, the term: vapor retarder.

When moisture storage effects are added, things get real interesting. Take a brick veneer cladding that experiences rain-wetting followed by exposure to solar radiation. The sun tends to drive moisture inward. It makes sense to put a vapor barrier behind a brick veneer to stop this inward flow.

But what happens when you install a vapor barrier behind a brick veneer in a cold climate? Do you also want to install a vapor barrier on the inside? I think that would be a vapor barrier on both sides. Maybe we want a vapor barrier on the outside behind the brick veneer and a vapor retarder on the inside.

Maybe we should use an insulating sheathing that is vapor semi-permeable on the outside with sufficient thermal resistance to elevate the temperature of the condensing surface during the heating season, and have a vapor permeable interior finish to permit drying to the interior? It sounds complicated and it is.

It turns out that the distinction between a vapor barrier and a vapor retarder is a necessity. Let us examine a common building material: kraft-faced fiberglass insulation. Is the kraft facing a vapor barrier or not?

It depends on the time of year. If the facing is installed towards the interior in a climate such as Washington, D.C., it is a vapor barrier in the winter and a vapor retarder in the summer.

How is this so? Well, kraft-facing is impregnated with bitumen and the paper-bitumen composite is hygroscopic. It adsorbs water as the relative humidity it is exposed to rises. As the quantities of adsorbed water increases, the vapor permeability of the composite changes.

This reflected by the differences between dry-cup permeability test values and wet-cup permeability test values. Under dry-cup testing, one side of the material is maintained at 0 percent r.h. and the other side is maintained at 50 percent r.h.

Under wet-cup testing one side of the material is maintained at 50 percent r.h. and the other side is maintained at 100 percent r.h. So under dry-cup testing the kraft facing has a perm rating of 1 perm, and under wet-cup testing the kraft facing has a perm rating of 5 perms.

In the winter months, when the inside relative humidity is high, we have a vapor retarder on the inside, that permits drying to the inside.

It sure would be a dumb idea to replace this kraft facing with a 6-mil polyethylene sheet that would trap water in the wall assembly during the summer. One of the problems in the building industry is that we have a spreading "cult-like" mentality that worships at the "church of polyethylene".

This cult views the answer to all moisture problems as the installation of a polyethylene vapor barrier condom on the inside of buildings. This cult is also responsible for many more building failures than building successes. It's time that the cult deprogramming started.

Taking the proper care of your floors will keep them looking their best and will help them last longer.

Carpet Care

* Vacuum at least once a week!

When dirt and dust are left in a carpet, they become gritty, sharp particles that grind down the pile of the carpet.

Using a vacuum with a beater bar or rotating brush will loosen the dirt making it easier for the vacuum to remove soil. Vacuums with top-loading bags are preferred over bottom-loading bags.

* Change the disposable bag or empty the vacuum often.

Carpet with thick loop pile construction (Berber) may be sensitive to brushing, rubbing, or scraping of the pile surface which may cause fuzzing and pile distortion. It is recommended that vacuums with suction action only be used on these styles.

Carpet sweepers and electric brooms are useful for picking up crumbs and surface soil, but it is important to know that they will not deep clean.

* Use preventative maintenance

It is important to use runners at each entry to the home. This will greatly reduce the accumulation of dirt on your flooring.

Clean Spots and Spills Immediately! For best results, give prompt attention to spots and spills.

* Use a spoon or dull knife to remove solid materials.

* Blot up liquid spills with a white towel.

* Never rub, scrub, or use a brush. This may cause damage to carpet fibers.

* Use a cleaning agent and procedure appropriate for the type of stain being removed.

* Apply all cleaning agents to the cloth rather than directly to the stained area to avoid saturating the carpet when spot cleaning.

* Clean the fibers, not the backing.

* Do not rush. Deep stains might require repeat cleanings because they can "wick" back up after initial cleaning.

* Work from the outside to the center of large stains. This prevents spreading.

Your carpet should be professionally cleaned at least every 12 to 18 months depending on traffic in your home.

Hardwood Care

Take good care of your hardwood floors and they will last a lifetime.

* Water and hardwood floors do not mix! Use only the manufacturers recommended cleaning products on your hardwood floor.

* Small stones, mud and gritty dirt tracked in from outside can scratch the finish of your wood floor. To help combat this, use long bristle welcome mats placed at all outside entrances for people to wipe their feet on before entering onto the floors. Also, vacuum using a soft bristle brush attachment.

* Narrow wheels, sharp wooden legs or metal furniture legs can scratch and dent hardwood floors. Any furniture that rests directly on top of a hardwood floor should have felt protectors, or furniture coasters under all legs.

* There are many over the counter oil-based soaps and wax based cleaning products that may damage or dull the finish of your wood floor. Only use the manufacturers recommended cleaning products on your hardwood flooring.

* If your hardwood floor has a polyurethane finish never use a paste wax on the floors surface. A paste wax may form a sticky film on your floor and allow tracked in dirt to stick to your wood finish. Wax will not adhere to a polyurethane finish and may make re-application of polyurethane difficult.

* When accidents occur and liquid is spilled on your hardwood floor, use a slightly damp white cloth, or paper towel to immediately clean up and dry the affected area. For more difficult spots, follow the manufacturers recommended cleaning procedures.

Laminate Care

Although Laminate floors are tough, you should follow these directions to keep them in good shape.

* Remove loose dirt by using a non-beater bar vacuum or a dust mop.

* With a damp mop or cloth, clean your laminate flooring once a week with a vinegar solution (1/4 cup of white vinegar to 2 gallons of clean tap water) or a nonabrasive household cleaner, such as ammonia and water solution. Do not saturate the flooring.

* Do not use abrasive cleaners, steel wool, soap-based detergents, waxes, polishes, or scouring powder as they may scratch or dull the flooring surface.

* Wipe up spills immediately. Avoid allowing liquids to stand on your flooring.

* A more frequent dust mopping or vacuuming schedule may be required in high traffic or sandy areas.

* For tough spots, such as candle wax or chewing gum, harden the spot with ice and then gently scrape the spot with a plastic scraper. Even a credit card will do. Be careful not to scratch the flooring surface. Wipe clean with a damp cloth.

* Do not use any type of buffing machine.

* Use protective mats at the entry and exits to help collect the dirt and moisture that could damage the laminate floor.

* Use floor protectors or glides under furniture legs.

* Frequent vacuuming using a non-beater bar will pick up dirt and grime.

Glazed Ceramic Tile Care

Glazed ceramic tile requires less floor care than most other flooring types. However, there are things you need to do to maintain the beauty of your ceramic tile floor.

* Wash the floor regularly to remove any dirt or grit. Use a water-based all purpose cleaner. Stay away from cleaners containing acid or bleach. Acidic cleaners, even a light solution of vinegar and water, will etch and eventually damage tile and grout.

* Sweep, dust mop or vacuum your glazed tile regularly.

* Ammonia based cleaners may discolor some types of colored grout. Acidic cleaners will also cause cementitious grout to deteriorate and strip the pigmentation from colored grout.

* After washing with a water-based cleaner you should thoroughly rinse the floor with clean, warm water.

* The glazed ceramic finish should never be waxed.

* Liquids spills may be wiped up with an all-purpose cleaner. This will also help the grout joints from becoming discolored from spilled liquids.

* Non-epoxy grout joints should be treated with a water-based grout sealer to simplify maintenance and prevent discoloration from spilled liquids.

Vinyl Care

* Vacuum regularly to remove grit and sand. Wash your floor occasionally with the recommended floor cleaner.

* Wipe up spills immediately. If necessary, clean with the recommended cleaner. You can also clean with lukewarm water and clear ammonia.

* If your floor becomes dull looking you may need to add the recommended floor polish to restore the original gloss level. First, try cleaning with lukewarm water and clear ammonia to see if there is a film on your floor causing the dullness.

* Never use abrasive cleaners, soaps, paste waxes, or solvents on your vinyl floor.

* Place non-staining, walk-off mats or carpet runners at every outside entry to your room. This will help keep sand and grit from being tracked on to your floor.

Area Rug Care

Regular vacuuming will help rugs retain their beauty and will extend the life of the rug.

Clean spills immediately with the following method: blot with a clean cloth, spot clean with a solution of clear dish washing detergent (non-bleach) and water, rinse with water, and blot dry.

When necessary, have your area rug professionally cleaned periodically using the hot water extraction method.

Window Covering Care

MiniBlinds: Vacuum with a soft brush attachment or dust with a feather duster or lambs-wool duster or tool for blinds.

Vertical Blinds: Vacuum carefully with the brush attachment used for draperies, or clean with a lambs-wool duster. If fabric-covered, spot-clean only; do not use soap and water.

Wood Blinds: Dust with vacuum or lambs-wool duster. For occasional deep cleaning, use a wood cleaner such as oil soap. Do not use soap and water on wood blinds.

Wood Shutters: Dust natural wood shutters. If painted, wash in place. Cover the floor and sill with plastic or a drop cloth. Use a brush dipped in detergent and water. Rinse and dry with a cotton cloth.

Home improvement scams are most frequently put into operation through door-to-door contact with homeowners. Legitimate, home repair contractors reach potential customers through advertising or phone solicitation.

Be wary of any salesperson that comes to the door, and puts pressure on you to pay up front, or take the deal on painting or paving right now. These are common homeowner scams and tactics.

Do not pay upfront money to a contractor. Various state laws prohibit contractors from this kind of business transaction. A contractor must provide a service in order to receive consideration (payment).

Coming to your home to give an estimate or even entering into a contract with a homeowner, is not providing a service.

Once work has started and/or materials have been received, that is when a contractor has provided a service that constitutes a payment from the homeowner. And that payment should not exceed the percentage of the contract price that the work performed and/or materials received account for.

A contractor should establish a schedule of values for every project that list the value of each activity of the project, and the homeowners payment is made for the percent complete for each activity on a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly bases, depending of the particular project. If a contactor is asking for upfront money, this is an indication of:

a. Inadequately trained management
b. Bad company business ethics
c. Lack of company working capital
d. History of low quality workmanship that has resulted in homeowner non-payment
e. A money scam that the homeowner will not be able to recover.

Resist being pressured into signing a contract with a contractor on their first visit. This is a tactic used by some contractors to keep homeowners from comparing them to another contractor and researching their history.

A quality contractor will be willing to make as many visits as necessary to assist a homeowner in their decision. Your home is the single largest investment you will ever make and a quality contractor will want you to be satisfied with the improvements they will be performing.

Con artists frequently zero in on low income people and seniors. They think these people are especially susceptible to high pressure tactics. These con artists are persuasive about unneeded or overpriced home improvement scams.

If a contract is signed, the homeowner may land in more trouble with a collaborating financial institution for refusing to pay for slipshod or unfinished work.

Law enforcement agencies and consumer groups are well aware of organized American Gypsies or Travelers. These are most likely the door-to-door salespeople for home repair scams that homeowners encounter.

These Travelers are organized, have new trucks and equipment with in or out-of-state license plates, and, if asked, provide in or out-of-state phone numbers and addresses.

Some of these groups have burglarized the homes of distracted owners, or have offered to drive an owner to the bank so the owner can remove money from an account.

So how do you select a contractor without being scammed?

Your first resource for a recommendation should be family, friends and neighbors who have had similar work done for them. A local flooring distributor or home improvement warehouse can also help you locate reputable contractors.

During the first meeting, it is a good idea to ask the contractor for other references you can contact. If they do not have any references, it would be a good idea to find a different contractor.

Another good place to locate a reputable home improvement or flooring contractor would be the manufacturers website or a distribution center. Manufacturers usually have strict rules for the contractors they recommend.

Plus, contractors listed on the manufacturers website or recommended through a distribution center, will usually take more care in their business dealings because they are subject to lose more than just a customer, they could lose their backing from the manufacturer if they do not fly straight.

The relationship you have with your contractor is an important one. You will want one who is qualified, capable and trustworthy. Here is a summary of suggestions:

1. Just ask. Word-of-mouth is the best advertising. Ask friends, neighbors and relatives. If there is a home you like with improvements similar to what you want in your neighborhood, ask the owners who did the work. Your local distributor will also have suggestions. Follow up on the leads they give you.

2. Take a look. Ask the flooring installer or contractor for before and after photos of their jobs. Ask for addresses of projects they have done in your area.

3. Get references. Before signing a contract, get the names of 3 or 4 of the contractors customers. Call and get their input. Also ask the contractor about awards or endorsements they may have received.

4. Check with the Better Business Bureau. If you have any concerns, call your local BBB. They will be able to tell you if any consumer complaints are on record.

Bathroom vanities are accessories that would go with anyone's tastes and budget. A finely-chosen vanity cabinet or an eye-pleasing dressing table will just add to the look of your bathroom. Bathroom vanities play a defining role in giving a pleasing and ambient look to your bathroom.

The customer has many options to choose from when it comes to bathroom vanities. All they should have is a sturdy and an even surface that is resistant to all kinds of spills, strains, impact of heat, etc. There are materials in the market which are anti-heat and flame. Considering that the frequency of usage of the bathroom vanity top will be high, the durability of the product and its appearance is important. Apart from these, it all depends on the consumer's tastes of style and design. To suit one's bathroom, bathroom vanities are available either in standard form, or in custom.

Bathroom vanity tops have a wide range of options to choose from. The homeowner is given some basic material categories, which helps to bring down the confusion regarding selection from the wide choices which would be applicable to the furniture of your bathroom. Marble, tiles and slate, assembled or even synthetic materials are among the popular varieties of vanity tops. Even if one wishes to purchase his vanity top for the bathroom vanity cabinet and/or the sink, its at his disposal to fix it himself, as there are pre-drilled holes in many of the prefabricated models.

Some of the religiously-followed rules when refining one's choice about bathroom vanity tops is the style and design. One can create a bathroom that is a replica of their own lifestyle by choosing from the normal and the cleaner designs of the in-demand oval and rectangular shapes, to even the richly, uncommon and scallop designs. Some creative homeowners can order the bathroom vanity tops to suit their personal requirements. Since the top is one vital factor to make the bathroom look good, it should be considered with care, as it is an important aspect of bathroom vanities.

For bathrooms smaller in size, a common pedestal sink can be replaced with a stylish one to make a better use of the given space. The sink vanities of a bathroom provide an everlasting impression with the combination of spacious storage and a counter top surface. For larger bathrooms, a classic touch can be added by providing for a double sink. It is also practical for families and couples.

Vanities in large bathrooms can provide an ideal place to dress-up and take care of one's daily grooming schedules. In the case of resistance to water, a bedroom vanity is not likely to be as effective as a bathroom vanity, so it must not be placed in any area where it can be splashed. If one is planning for a bathroom makeover and has a limited budget, then vanity tables can be bought with matching stools and chairs, as a set.

Notwithstanding the preferences and the budget of any individual, one is sure to find a bathroom or bedroom vanity which can give their bathroom a completely new look!
